Purchased a lens with a broken aperture unit. From the dent on the lens cap, it looks like it was dropped on the mount side, causing the cover for the aperture blades to pop off and the blades to fall out and get jammed in the zoom mechanism. I disassembled the lens and cleaned a few elements with oil spots from the damage and reassembled without the aperture blades. It can only be used wide open, but it's still a fast and sharp lens in Av/M mode. Unfortunately I stripped one of the 3 screws holding the front element to the rest of the assembly, had to use a screw extractor to get it unstuck. Lesson learned: use proper JIS screwdrivers and apply a LOT of downward pressure when you think a screw is tough to get out. Not sure why these 3 screws were particularly tight, they were tougher to unscrew than any other I have encountered in Canon cameras and Canon/Sigma lenses I've disassembled.
