At about the same time that moviegoers were hearing this fairly obscure pre-WW2 tune in the soundtrack of the 1951 film “I Was An American Spy,” young Tony Bennett (still looking for his first major hit) was in the Columbia Records studio with arranger-conductor Percy Faith and producer Mitch Miller creating this piece of musical history. “Because Of You” spent ten weeks atop the Billboard record charts and was (by some accounts) the most popular single of 1951. Tony immediately followed up with another #1 million-seller “Cold, Cold Heart” and the two-sided beauty “Blue Velvet / Solitaire,” all of which are included in this collection....as are the runner-up versions of “Because Of You” by Les Baxter and by Gloria DeHaven with Guy Lombardo.
