The recording is the first commercial rendition (1979) of the song and features harmony vocals from Don and Sarah Morgan. Davey is the original composer of the magpie.

The picture shows (left to right) the late great Johnny Collins, a somewhat younger Davey, a friend of Johnny and Jim and the redoubtable Jim Mageean. The picture is from Bracknell Folk Festival (1981??) and could well have been taken when the chaps were singing The Magpie.
The Magpie illustration is by Pam Eddiford/P J Richards. She sent the picture to Davey as a 'thank you' for permission to use lyrics from the song in her gothic fantasy novel, 'Deeper, Older, Darker'. Pam produced the fabulous artwork, crammed with totems and symbols, for the album of Davey's meisterwerk, The Rite of Spring.
