In 2013, seven alien species (Votans) arrived on Earth, expecting it to be uninhabited. Confusion and conflict ensued, leading to the destruction of nation-states and the use of Votan terraforming technology, changing Earth's landscape. Decades later, in the town of Defiance, built upon the ruins of St. Louis, Joshua Nolan and his adopted Votan daughter Irisa discover a plot to destroy the town. They decide to stay, with Nolan becoming the lawkeeper. He investigates various crimes, conspiracies, and a buried Votan spaceship while navigating conflicts between human and alien families in this diverse melting pot.
