Ground nesting birds are rare in that they nest on the ground or in low-lying scrub, such as on heathlands. Ground nesting birds are susceptible to danger during nesting season from human proximity. Nests with eggs or chicks may be abandoned if the adult bird feels threatened. Due to their camouflaged feathers, ground nesting birds can be very difficult to spot, even if very close to them. At the point at which you do see one close to you, particularly if the adult is providing a ‘distraction display’ to warn you away, the damage may already be done. Predators such as crows have learnt that distraction displays are a sign that a nest is close by, and therefore human presence near the nest may indirectly cause the predation of the young in that nest. The film highlights the need to be aware of the dangers that you might inadvertently pose to ground nesting birds when out walking, cycling, or taking a dog for a walk.
Take home message: Stay on the paths during nesting season (March-September), and follow the guidance of the area you are in. Be aware of your surroundings and of any distressed wildlife you encounter. Spread awareness to other people about this important issue.
