⚓Model ship building guide n° 18 || How to furl the fore stay sail and attach and furl the top gaff sail. Attaching the flags and coils. Attaching the life boats.
Join me as I embark on the journey of building a scale model of the Fram, a legendary ship of exploration. The Fram, constructed in 1892, was the first ship specially built in Norway for polar research. Designed by Colin Archer, it is renowned for its incredible resilience to ice pressure and its pivotal role in groundbreaking Arctic and Antarctic expeditions led by Fridtjof Nansen, Otto Sverdrup, and Roald Amundsen.
In this series, I’ll take you through every step of the building process, from unboxing the kit to the final finishing touches. Unlike my San Felipe model, where I went for a dark, weathered, and fearsome look, I aim to present the Fram as shiny and pristine—right out of the factory, ready for its first voyage. Along the way, I’ll share insights into this historic vessel, discuss modeling techniques, and showcase the artistry of recreating a ship that changed the course of exploration history. Perfect for model shipbuilders, history enthusiasts, and fans of craftsmanship!
Join me for the final chapter of my Fram model ship build — the legendary Norwegian polar exploration vessel built for Fridtjof Nansen’s Arctic expeditions. In this video, I take you step-by-step through the last stages of the construction process, from detailed rigging to the final display.
We begin with furling the forestay sail, followed by my interpretation of how to attach the top gaff sail. I’ll show you how I make and mount realistic flags, add small but eye-catching coils of rope, and install the lifeboats on deck. Finally, the Fram is placed on her stand for a full showcase of the completed model.
This wooden ship kit from OcCre has been a rewarding build, and I’m excited to share the techniques, tips, and personal touches that brought this historic vessel to life in miniature. Whether you’re a ship modeling enthusiast, a history lover, or simply enjoy detailed craftsmanship, I hope you enjoy the journey to the finished Fram.
