No matter one’s ultimate social or economic standing, genetics played the determining role in the destiny of an individual. Traits passed down from dozens or generations, or just one, could steer decisions and direct lives for better or for worse. Stoicism, cynicism, cunning, or revenge could be ingrained into the blood of a child from his or her elders, and an aspect that vital to one’s persona was nigh impossible to shed. For one character in A Song of Ice and Fire, the hunger for vengeance was transferred from father to daughter in this very way: this character was Obara Sand. Hello everyone, and welcome back to Exploring Fiction. The eldest of the Sand Snakes, Obara chose her father, a prince, over her mother, a prostitute, and learned from him the ways of court and weapon. However, she also bore his unquenchable thirst for revenge, which was only amplified when the Viper was slain. Though this ambition drove her, it may yet also prove to be a shackle.
