Pulsating Heat Pipe- Closed Loop PHP Visualization

Heat Pipe - Pulsating heat pipes (PHPs) are made from long capillary tubes bent into many turns, with the evaporator and condenser sections located at these turns. In the 1990, Akachi a Japanese scientist proposed a new type of heat pipe known as Pulsating Heat Pipe. A passive two-phase heat transfer device that has been used for thermal management of electronic devices to remove heat without any electrical power input. Heat pipe is able to dissipate substantial amount of heat with relatively small temperature drop. Closed loop pulsating heat pipe (CLPHP) is made from long capillary tube bent into many U-turns, closed in an endless loop, with the evaporator and adiabatic section is optional depends on the locations of evaporator and condenser. The diameter of the tube must be small enough such that liquid vapor plugs and slugs exist. The unique feature of PHPs compared with the conventional heat pipe is that there is no wick structure to return the condensate to the heating section. When the temperature difference between evaporator and condenser exceeds a certain threshold, the gas bubbles and liquid plugs begin to oscillate spontaneously back and forth. The amplitude of oscillations is quite strong and the liquid plugs penetrate into both condenser and evaporator. The heat is thus transferred not only by the latent heat transfer like in other types of heat pipes, but also by sweeping of the hot walls by the colder moving fluid and vice versa. This phenomenon is the reason of high efficiency of PHPs in comparison with other types of heat pipes. Compared to other cooling solutions, PHPs are simple and thus more reliable and cheap. In this video we show the flow visualization of 2 turns copper CLPHP with capillary glass tube in the intermediate section. working fluid is water.
