Fake it 'til you make it. No, thanks.
Allow me to explain.
Should you step into the person you're aspiring to be before you've "arrived"? Go for it.
Dress for the job you want - not the job you have? Sure thing.
Stretch yourself outside of your comfort zone and take some risks along the way? You got this.
Should you fake being someone you're not to earn recognition or respect at work? Nah. Be you, babe. Authenticity all the way.
This post was made with hesitation because of an internal conflict between celebrating all you bold, alpha, professionals while challenging you to be inclusive with how you define success and leadership. I wasn't nearly as articulate as I wanted to be in my video because I'm passionate about the topic while also nervous to rock the boat with people who I deeply respect and admire.
Part 2 of this 2-part series further explores leadership archetypes with a focus on all the "SHEroes" who shattered glass ceilings, overcome adversity, and didn't allow anyone to quiet their strong, beautiful voices. If that's you, then you have my utmost respect and gratitude.
Also, if that's you, then remember how it felt to be shamed, hushed, overlooked, and discredited while you persevered to the top. You can't see it -but I'm making my stinky face as I type this.
Don't pass that feeling on to other people who embody different personality traits and aspire to achieve their own version of success - which may or may not look like yours.
Don't create a leadership archetype that disqualifies the soft-spoken, introvert or the mild-mannered, people-pleasing person who seeks harmony and consensus.
Don't advise someone to be pushy, outspoken, or confrontational when that's just not in them.
Sometimes the most impactful leader is the gentle, quiet one, and what worked for you won't make sense for someone else.
Do empower others with advice that encourages authenticity, mutual respect, and sound judgment. Use your experience - however trying it might be - to celebrate justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Take your self-love and pass it on, babe.
