SON OF DRACULA: The Most UNUSUAL 1940's Universal Horror Film?

My name is Antonia Carlotta, and my Great Uncle Carl Laemmle started Universal Studios. Today's video was requested by a member of the Laemmle Faemmle on Patreon: He asked that I make a video about Son of Dracula because he said it's "the most unusual of the 1940s Universal horror films."

Son of Dracula was released October 20, 1943, and starred Lon Chaney Jr., Evelyn Ankers, Louise Allbritton, Robert Paige, and Frank Craven. It also featured Etta McDaniel and Sam McDaniel - the real life brother and sister of Hattie McDaniel. Son of Dracula was written by Curt Siodmak, who also wrote Universal's Wolf Man.

In Son of Dracula, Katherine Caldwell is obsessed with thoughts of eternal life, and she invites Count Alucard (Dracula spelled backward) to visit her. I don't want to spoil the rest of the film, but it's worth watching. Lon Chaney, Jr is divisive as Alucard, but Louise Allbritton is a strong lead and plays such a compelling character. It's not every day we get to see such a strong woman in classic film.

Son of Dracula is the first movie to show the man-to-bat transformation on screen, as well as the bat-to-man transformation. When it was released in 1943, it was Universal's best performing horror/sci-fi film of the year.
