This is a bit of a firehose lesson which goes over a bunch of initial things. Maybe this is due to Menyhárt knowing that people may skip around the book, or only pay for one lesson, and thus he is trying to get as much important information into their heads as possible so they live after the duel.
Important points:
Move backwards into your stance to get a bit of extra distance in case your opponent rushes you.
Keep your opponent at the same distance to be safe.
Best engagement is high tierce (of course), sometimes you may engage in prime. Don’t engage in quarte unless you specialize in it.
Retreat one step during parries for safety.
Execute a jump back if you attack to the body.
If you jump forward to attack, make sure it is small and you get out quickly.
Make sure any jumps are small and that you don’t trip or fall.
Recover as quickly as possible after an attack to stay safe.
Do not throw the cercle cut. It exposes too much.
Menyhárt also explains how to deal with a completely new opponent. He says to throw some feints to bait out reactions. If they like to parry riposte, then bait out their riposte and counter parry riposte. If your opponent attempts a pre-emptive strike, then be very careful about committing to any attack, instead make a feint to bait out the pre-emptive attack and parry riposte.
