The Classic of Tea, Cha Jing 茶经 in Chinese, is the first book about tea written by Lu Yu in the Tang Dynasty. Lu Yu and The Classic of Tea are the beginning of Chinese traditional tea culture. The book concisely and expansively summarized the history of tea before Lu Yu's time and elaborated on major domains of tea such as the origin of tea, processing, how to make tea, how to drink, etc. Lu Yu, therefore, has been considered tea sage or tea god, and the book The Classic of Tea (Cha Jing 茶经) marked a new era of tea where this simple beverage becomes an intellectual pursuit and cultural symbol.
