Between Heaven & Hell | Purgatory Creek Natural Area.

Join us for a festive Christmas celebration hike as we explore the Purgatory Creek Natural Area in the San Marcos' green belt system. This 4K video captures the serene forest setting, fascinating geology and scenic overlook - all along literary inspired trails.

The Purgatory Creek was named by early Anglo-American settlers to the San Marcos area who found the topography particularly challenging. Many years later, the “San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance” thematically named features of the natural area after Dante Alighieri’s “The Divine Comedy”, an epic poem depicting the fictional hero Dante’s allegorical journey through Hell, Purgatory and Heaven. Thus, hike and bike trails are named Dante, Malacoda, Matilda, Beatrice, Nimrod, Paraiso, and so on. As San Marcos is also home to Texas State University, perhaps these literary references are further appreciated by the many university students who enjoy these trails.

We should also note that some of the other trails were named after celebrated Roman poets, Ovid and Virgil. “Ave atque vale”.
