Dominion or community?

In the concluding chapter of her 2014 book, Ask the Beasts: Darwin and the God of Love, Catholic theologian Elizabeth Johnson distinguishes between two "paradigms," two ways of seeing, the relationship between human beings and the rest of the natural world: the "dominion paradigm," which sees humanity as superior to or above other creatures, and "the community of creation paradigm," which declines this hierarchical view. Here we outline the difference and assess the implications of each view.
