Rather than compile a "Top 10" or "best of" list, these playlist videos are meant to give the listener / viewer a more comprehensive view of the band's repertoire. Led Zeppelin is considered by many to be the greatest rock & roll / classic rock band of all time. Coming out of the Yardbirds, guitarist and producer Jimmy Page set out to form a heavy group with vocalist Robert Plant, bassist / keyboardist John Paul Jones and drummer extraordinaire John Bonham. While they initially called themselves The New Yardbirds, a comment from Keith Moon about the formation of this group going over like a "Led Zeppelin" provided them with their name. Their debut from 1969 Led Zeppelin I included hits like "Good Times Bad Times" "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" "Communication Breakdown" and soon to be heavy metal classics like "Dazed and Confused" and "How Many More Times". Indeed the heavy sound would be very influential on heavy bands to come, including Black Sabbath. There were unfortunately issues regarding copyright infringement that would leave a mark on their reputation, but even those who have claimed infringement have praised Led Zeppelin's interpretation of their material. Led Zeppelin II was another success with "Whole Lotta Love" "Heartbreaker" and the Lord of the Rings inspired "Ramble On". It was on Led Zeppelin III from 1970, following a songwriting retreat to Bron-Yr-Aur, where Page and Plant began to experiment with more acoustic guitar driven songs like "Tangerine" and "That's The Way". There were still electric guitar rockers like "Immigrant Song" and "Since I've Been Loving You" would become a staple of their live shows. Their fourth album, commonly referred to as 1971 Led Zeppelin IV or Zoso, was untitled in response to issues with critics opinions of the previous albums. It is often referred to as the greatest rock album of all time with hits like "Black Dog" "Rock and Roll" "When the Levee Breaks" and arguably one of the most famous rock songs of all time "Stairway to Heaven". The later was played to death on rock radio and became something of a parody. Wayne's World utters the famous phrase "No Stairway! Denied!" A successful tour from 1972 would eventually produce their How The West was Won live compilation. Because of their intense touring schedule, drugs were becoming an issue and Robert Plant had to have vocal surgery resulting in a noticeable change in his singing. Nevertheless, Zeppelin soldiered on in 1973 to release Houses of the Holy which featured "The Song Remains the Same" "The Rain Song" "Over the Hills and Far Away" and "The Ocean". They would also film a concert at Madison Square Garden that year, later released in 1976 as The Song Remains the Same, which included additional b-roll and fantasy elements featuring the band pertaining to a specific song. By 1975, Led Zeppelin was the biggest band in the world and they would release the double album Physical Graffiti. Highlights included "Kashmir" "Trampled Under Foot" and "Ten Years Gone". During the supporting tour, Robert Plant was in a serious car accident, which lead to him recuperating from injuries throughout most of the production for 1976's Presence came out. Somewhat divided among fans, the album did feature the epic "Achilles Last Stand" "Nobody's Fault but Mine" and the rockabilly inspired "Candy Store Rock". Their 1977 tour proved problematic and was canceled in the middle of the run. Zep fans would have to wait until 1979 for In Through the Out Door, another successful album somewhat divided among fans. Hit songs like "All My Love" and "Fool in the Rain" were poppier, while "In the Evening" featured the more guitar-driven Zeppelin sound fans had come to love. This would be their last album together as John Bonham would die of alcohol poisoning in 1980, effectively ending Led Zeppelin's career. They would reunited at various times throughout the next 40 years, including Live Aid and their celebrated 2007 Reunion, Celebration Day. Hear JT's picks for the best Led Zeppelin songs.
