One of the most important things about writing poetry, is that you’re enjoying it. And if you’re not, you may as well put away your pen, an paper, because there’s pretty much NO point in wasting yours and your reader’s time. If like me, you’re writing poems practically
everyday, then admittedly it can become a bit mechanical, or maybe even stale, which is why you have to be absolutely loving life when at your desk. So let me share with you my three favourite poetry techniques that I use to keep my poems fresh every time I go over them!
Remember, these may help you too but as I always say...
everything creative is subjective so make sure you take the time to find your own voice and style and figure out what you do that makes you smile when reading your own poetry.
1. Never overthink your first drafts.
2. Metre. How many times have you sat singing a song over and over again? Because its a catchy tune right? Are there any poems you know off by heart? Can you think of any off the top of your head right now? I’ll wait. Now be honest, can you identify it being in any metre?
3. Rhyme. Remember, these are MY favourite techniques. All the cool kids say poems don’t need to rhyme, but luckily I’ve never been one of the cool kids. If you’re an avid reader of mine, or want to head over to my instagram or maybe read a collection of mine cough, available now on my website or amazon then it will not take you long at all to see that I love implementing rhyme. It’s all over my work. In 97% of it i’d say! It just challenges my brain, it makes me smile, and whenever I read rhymes in poetry I’m always impressed by the
wordsmithery. That’s a word, I swear.
I hope by now I’ve hit home about Metre and Rhyme. If you’ve been following my videos as they release chronologically, I hope you’ve learnt everything you need to know about them as I will
probably be moving onto a few more advanced techniques and teachings now, and if you’re watching this in the future, hello future follower and friend. Please do not be alarmed when you
watch my videos if they crop up again (which they shall) because they're my foundational principles as a poet and wanted to really drill them in.
Remember that you need to love what you’re doing, and at the root of this video, I’m trying to tell you that you should be having fun with your writing and exploration. So study your own work and see if you notice any patterns. The only person who can tell you what you like and don’t like is you! The answers are in your words.
Let me know if you liked this video, and if you’re a super student, leave me a rose emoji in the comments to let me know you watched until the very end! I share my work across social medias such as Instagram and now Tik Tok too, so do follow me on there, I want more friends!
See you next week.
