올해 ‘Kiaf Highlights 10 Semi-finalists’에 선정된 최지원(Jiwon Choi, b.1996)은 생명과 죽음의 간극, 현재와 미래가 교차하는 진공의 공간을 탐구하며 그 틈새에 위치한 세계를 표현해 왔다. 그의 작품에서 반복적으로 등장하는 세라믹 인형, 공예품, 오래된 시계, 박제된 곤충은 자연으로부터 왔거나 그가 수집해 온 오브제로부터 영감을 받은 사물이다. 그들은 내밀한 화면 구조 속에 홀로 혹은 군집을 이루며 등장하는데 이는 주로 삶을 다했음에도 여전히 살아 있어 작가의 현재에 영향을 끼치는 대상들이다. 따라서 그려진 개체들은 현실적인 차원의 것이기 보다 동시대 구성원들의 삶의 의미와 작가 본인이 처한 세계를 이해하고자 하는 상징적 행위의 결과물로 볼 수있다. 그들은 부서질 듯 연약하면서도 반짝이는 매끈한 질감과 형태를 갖고 무대 위에 오르며, 문과 창, 벽, 커튼, 액자 틀의 앞과 뒤에서 비밀스런 모습을 내비친다. 

Jiwon Choi (b. 1996), selected as a 10 semi-finalist for Kiaf Highlights 2024, explores the space between life and death, the void where the present and future intersect, and expresses the world within that gap. Her recurring motifs include ceramic dolls, crafts, old clocks, and stuffed insects—objects either sourced from nature or inspired by items she has collected. These objects appear singly or in clusters within an intimate composition, representing things that have ended their lives yet continue to influence the artist's present. As such, the depicted objects can be seen as a symbolic effort to understand the lives of her contemporaries and the world she inhabits, rather than a reflection of reality. They take center stage, with their delicate yet shiny and smooth textures and forms, revealing a secretive presence behind doors, windows, walls, curtains, and frames.
