Sunset Riders (Genesis) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Konami's 1992 Sega Genesis arcade run-and-gun shooter game, Sunset Riders.

Played through Hard with Billy.

I always wanted to like this game. It's not bad, broken, or anything else particularly heinous. It's just a hideously emaciated shadow of the fantastic arcade game (and it's f'ing amazing SNES port), butchered and tortured beyond belief. It looks similar in screenshots because it's all recycled tiles and sprites (much like Hyperstone Heist did), but this Sunset Riders really doesn't preserve much of the game play's spirit. It's super short, the levels are split into tiny segments, there's a bonus game that it feels like you play half the time, and on hard mode, I swear this game rivals Contra: Hard Corps. in it's difficulty toward the end. This took a lot of practice - and if I weren't already well practiced at the SNES version, I probably would have played it on Normal and called it a day.

If you've never played the SNES or arcade games, I'm sure you'll like it fine. It's nothing if not perfunctory and rote - meaning it does what it sets out to do - and is reasonably fun in the process. It just lacks any of the artistry, magic, or sense of level design that the original was famed for.

In the 90s, I would've told you that it's the best you're going to get if you don't have a Super NES and really have to play Sunset Riders, so go for it. These days, I'd say it's worth a look for people that are interested in the series and this odd-one-out version, but if you want the best experience there's no question. Go SNES or go home. Or have a dedicated arcade cabinet. I imagine that'd be a good way to go :)
