A libel is a public and malicious imputation of a crime, or of a vice or defect, condition, status or circumstance tending to cause the dishonor, discredit or contempt of a natural or juridical person, or to blacken the memory of one who is dead. (Art 353 of the revised penal code). It is punishable of imprisonment for 6 months and one day, or fined in the amount of Php20,000.00.
The crime of Intriguing against honor is committed by one who indulges in purveying intrigue the principal purpose of which is to blemish the honor and reputation of a person. The crime under Article 364 of the RPC punishes any act of intriguing or engaging in gossiping for the purpose of blemishing the honor or reputation of a person. In other words, the offender is involved in purveying a gossip (or chismis) against a person to ruin his/her reputation. It is punishable of imprisonment for 30 days or a fine of not more than Php20,000.00.
