I have made heavy duty custom stands for my NEAT speakers - because they are worth it, and no way can my dog knock them over ... it turns out they are super stable with a 12 x 9 inch base of half inch plate steel.
The component parts are welded together and act as a solid mass. The 10mm thick steel top plate is just smaller than the speaker footprint , and I used Audio Serenity gel speaker isolation mounts at each corner.
The columns are cut down 6 inch RSJs . Eventually the stands will sit on M10 spikes .
They are probably perform as good as my ears can detect. However I can pimp them by using infills in the web - possibly poured lead, with a bonded hardwood cover plate. I could try different upmarket acoustic pucks . But I might be getting well into the laws of diminishing returns - maybe a light rub with snake oil?
Amp is Maranz 40N. Cables are Audioquest Rocket 44 with fancy gold banana plugs. Alas the position in the room is the only place they can live.
Currently sounds great .
