Title of Video: Circle of Fifths - The Circle of Fifths - How to create, use, transpose, compose and memorise the circle of fifths!
What's explained in this video? The circle of fifths is a diagram which helps us to visualise relationships between keys. This video explains (in detail) everything you need to know!
But, what's all the fuss about the Circle of Fifths and what's the point in it? My students look at it and say "wow! It looks complicated!" But, honestly, this could be the answer to your prayers! I teach my students how to memorise it so they can recreate it in their theory exams. Then, there's no thinking involved! Seriously! About half the theory paper is answered through the circle of fifths!
In the video I explain the following:
(00.00) CHAPTER 1: A Step by step guide on how to recreate the circle of fifths. This includes what a 'fifth' is and how many times you have to count in fifths to create the diagram. I show this live on the piano. Using the 'fifths' method, we find all the major keys on the circle of fifths, the names of the sharps and flats and how to link sharps and flats with particular keys (key signatures). Finally we learn how to add the minor keys to the circle of fifths (by the minor 3rd/ relative minor method - although I do explain the 'fifths' method too).
(09:55) CHAPTER 2: I go onto (probably the most important chapter) about what it can be used for. There are 5 uses covered in the video, all of which could help you immensely if you are struggling to understand some aspects of music theory: 1) How to recall key signatures using the circle of fifths 2) How to write major and minor scales using the circle of fifths 3) How to analyse music using the circle of fifths 4) How to transpose music using the circle of fifths 5) How to compose music using the circle of fifths There are worked examples and musical excerpts to help your understanding throughout this section. Never again will you have to learn key signatures - they are all there for you, just by using the circle of fifths. Just learn how to write it out quickly for your theory exam (covered in chapter 3)
(21:51) CHAPTER 3 - How to memorise the circle of fifths In this chapter I cover how to work out the sharps and flats using a mneumonic. We then learn how to use these sharps and flats to add all the keys onto the circle of fifths and how to add the key signatures.
