Checking a Suitcase vs Being Gate Checked

Here are some of the main differences:

Regular Bag Check
for larger bags
purchase ahead of flight
drop off at checkin desk
collect at baggage claim

Gate Checked Bag
usually carryon bag & strollers
Volunteer or forced to check
get bag tag from gate agent & hand over to ground staff
collect at baggage claim OR sometimes in boarding bridge
