On November 22, 1997, Michael Hutchence was found dead in Room 524 of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Sydney, Australia. He was 37 years old. The New South Wales coroner ruled it suicide, citing his history of depression, a recent custody battle, and the circumstances of his death.

But Michael's family immediately disputed this verdict. They pointed to evidence suggesting autoerotic asphyxiation—an accidental death. The body position, the lack of a suicide note, Michael's recent statements about future plans, and other factors didn't align with intentional suicide, they argued.

In 2000, forensic pathologist Dr. Derrick Pounder reviewed the case and agreed: "The circumstances point to accident, not suicide." But the official verdict has never been changed.

Michael's death was followed three years later by the death of his girlfriend Paula Yates, who died of a heroin overdose in 2000. Their daughter Tiger Lily was left orphaned at age 4 and was raised by Paula's ex-husband Bob Geldof.

INXS attempted to continue with replacement singers but officially retired in 2012. The band had sold over 50 million albums worldwide and produced iconic hits like "Need You Tonight" and "Never Tear Us Apart."
