In Week Two of our All Things New series, we explored New Freedom and God’s desire for us not just to be set free, but to live free. Using the parable of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11–24, Jesus shows us how easily we can misunderstand freedom, how true freedom begins, and how it is sustained.
The younger son believed freedom meant independence — doing life on his own terms. What initially felt like freedom quickly became slavery, leaving him empty and broken. True freedom began when he came to his senses and was honest about his condition. Instead of fixing himself, he chose to return to the Father.
In a powerful picture of grace, the father runs to the son, restores his identity, and celebrates his return. This reminds us that freedom is not earned through effort or performance — it is received through grace. However, as Galatians 5:1 teaches us, freedom must also be defended daily by standing firm and refusing to return to old patterns, lies, or ways of living.
