Since 1884, the Stuttgart rack railway, affectionately called "Zacke" or "Zacketse" by the local residents, connects the Marienplatz south of the city center with the Degerloch district on the Filder plateau. From there, the "Filderbahn" interurban tram served the surrounding towns starting in 1888. Today, the rack railway still serves as an attractive direct connection and serves the residential areas north of Degerloch.
The 2,2 kilometer route is the only rack railway within a german city. There is no special tariff, so all regular public transport tickets are valid. It runs every 15 minutes, though service ends as early as 9 PM.
In the late 2010s, the three cars of the ZT4 type were reaching the end of their lifespan after almost 40 years of operation. Hence the decision was made to replace the existing fleet by ordering three new low-floor trains, which were to be manufactured by Stadler Rail. The first new car arrived in 2021. In May 2023, the by then only remaining old ZT4, car no. 1002, ran for the last time.
This video shows both the old and new cars in service on this unique railway.
