In John 1:19–34 and Matthew 3:13–17, we witness a powerful moment between Jesus and John the Baptist. In the presence of the Messiah, John recognizes his own unworthiness and boldly proclaims that Jesus is greater. Though sinless, Jesus humbly insists on being baptized to fulfill all righteousness, setting an example of obedience and surrender for us all. In the presence of Christ, humility is our response. We are called to put our old selves to death, be buried in the waters of baptism, and rise to new life fully surrendered to Jesus.
