Universally considered the biggest highlight from Handel's masterpiece oratorio "Messiah", the Hallelujah Chorus is consequently one of the most recognizable pieces of music worldwide. It's almost impossible to find someone who isn't familiar with its opening "Hallelujah!" cries.
Of course, there's much more to the piece than that, and the entire remainder of the movement is one of the most exciting and brilliant choruses in all of choral music. It's difficult not to get swept up by the energy conjured up by the fugue on the words "And He shall reign forever and ever", or any of the times they reappear. This is especially true if the tempo is taken at a brisk pace.
Even the orchestration is striking here, too, in the context of its oratorio; over a span of around two-and-a-half hours, Handel was very stingy with the use of trumpets and drums, wisely saving them for monumental moments like these for maximum effect.
