How to use a menstrual cup! Menstrual cups for beginners! I’m here to tell you all the things NO ONE told me about using a menstrual cup.

In today’s video, we’re getting downright PERSONAL as I introduce you to my new BFF, the menstrual cup. This has become my go-to for my period. Growing up, I thought pads and tampons were my only 2 options. NOBODY...I repeat, NOBODY...even told me that menstrual cups existed until I was in my 20s.

Thankfully, now that I’ve discovered the menstrual cup, I will never look back!

If you are considering using a menstrual cup for your period, here are some MUST-know tips.

Tip 1: HOW TO INSERT A MENSTRUAL CUP
Know THIS - every single person’s body is different. Figure out which method works best for you! For me, I fold the cup twice to make it as small as possible before inserting it. The key here is to relax your muscles. Take a deep breath and give it a few tries. You will get it in there! Once you get past the opening, the cup will pop open and create a suction cup.

Tip 2: IT CAN BE PAINFUL TO PULL IT OUT
When taking the cup out, you will need to try to fold the cup small again. If you don’t fold before attempting to pull it out, it can be painful...so make it as small as possible. Don’t forget to keep the cup upright to avoid spillage. Go slow with this process. Slowly but surely, you will remove your cup!

Tip 3: YOU CAN SAVE $$$ + YOU’RE DOING SOMETHING GOOD FOR THE PLANET
A typical menstrual cup costs about $40, and some say that a single cup can last for up to 10 years. To be on the safe side, even if it only lasts you 5 years, you are still saving a ton of money and eliminating a lot of waste!

Tip 4: THE CUP HELPED STOP MY FREQUENT YEAST INFECTIONS
Using a menstrual cup, I discovered that it reduces the number of yeast infections I get in a typical year. In the past, I was prone to getting a yeast infection about 4 times a year. While I don’t think tampons were the direct cause of them, I think they weren’t necessarily helping the situation. Since I started using a menstrual cup, my yeast infections have appeared way less frequently! My guess is that a cup does not disturb the natural moisture balance as a tampon might!

Tip 5: YOU BARELY KNOW IT’S THERE
Menstrual cups are extremely comfortable to wear. At first, I thought they would be pretty uncomfortable (having a cup shoved inside of you?), but it’s actually the complete opposite! Once it’s inserted properly, I don’t even feel the cup at all.

Tip 6: THE MAX TIME YOU SHOULD HAVE IT INSERTED IS 12 HOURS
While you may not be able to feel the cup, you should make sure to not forget it’s there! Sticking to a 12-hour “wear time” is the way to go. You may need to remove sooner, depending on your flow.

Tip 7: PROPERLY CLEAN WITH BOILING WATER
I always make sure to clean the cup in a pot of boiling water on the stove between periods. I also do this a couple of times throughout my period. When I am on my period, I pour it out in the toilet and then use organic castile soap and water to clean the cup. Also, as a quick tip, always make sure your hands are clean when handling the cup!

Note - if you are hesitant to give the menstrual cup a try, check-in with your doctor to see if it’s the right option for you!

It is certainly my recommended choice for your period. I think they are incredible and are certainly a more sustainable option! Give it a go! It may become your new favorite option, too!
