There is a hidden slipperiness to the words simple and complex — not because their meanings aren't manifestly clear. They are. It's because they're so often manifestly wrong too. Jobs that we think of as relatively simple are actually dizzyingly complex. All across disciplines—business, politics, language, global health, food, the arts—simplexity plays a powerful and unappreciated role. The better we understand that role, the better we can make use of it.

Jeffrey Kluger is the Editor at Large for Time magazine and Time.com. He is the author of seven nonfiction books—including 2007’s “Simplexity” and 1994’s “Apollo 13,” upon which the movie was based. He is also the author of two novels. In his time at Time more than 40 cover stories. He has appeared regularly on CBS This Morning, The Today Show, CNN, MSNBC and others and has made guest appearances on The Colbert Report and Late Night With Seth Meyers. He is the Executive Producer of Time’s Emmy Award-winning “Year in Space” series.
