Two masterpieces separated by a century and a radical shift in Western music share this 2007 program conducted by the legendary Daniel Barenboim and his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. Misleadingly identified as Leonora No. 3, this overture was Beethoven's second attempt to provide his only opera, Fidelio, with its proper orchestral introduction. Composed for the title performance of 1806. Schoenberg's Variations for Orchestra were written between 1926 and 1928 and are the first work in which the composer applied his new serialist rules, developed during the preceding decade.
