Air Liquide - The Increased Difficulty Of Concentration

Within the techno school of Germany, Air Liquide offer one of the least stereotypical sounds and one of the most in line with rave instances. Formed in Cologne in 1991 by Ingmar “Dr Walker” Koch and Cem “Jammin` Unit” Oral, Air Liquide countered Frankfurt trance with a more psychedelic techno that found definitive consolidation on the Space Brothers EP (Rising High) and especially on the half ambient, half danceable double album The Increased Difficulty Of Concentration (Smile, 1995).
The double celebrates a new musical form, bordering between collage and stream of consciousness. The concept of techno is revolutionized by a sampling of imaginative rhythms. The sweeping dance of Liquid Air counterbalances the hypnotic raga of The Increased Difficulty On Concentration, the tribal rush of This Is Not A Mind Trip camouflages the hysterical trills of Imago, the neurasthenic syncopations of Ek-Stasis complement the industrial jungle of Space Brothers, the dub ballet of Stratus Static fades into the deafening blows of Theme From Robot Wars.
The height of estrangement is reached when Unraveling My Curls stitches transcendent, almost new age electronic melodies over exuberant cadences, and when Synsonic stretches its nine minutes of galactic sounds into a vortex of alienated dub and funk cadences.
Excursions out of the danceable reserve moments of high suggestion, from the slow, resigned psychedelic guitar jamming that rinses Ballad Of The Nameless Guitar Player in a cloud of electronic hiss and indecipherable samples (Hendrix, Pere Ubu and Orb at arm's length) to the tragic electronics of Cassiopeia, now bordering on the most abstract electronic poems.
Even a colossal half-hour Robot Wars Symphony in four movements towers in the midst of this colossal record: cosmic Schulze-like the first, immersed in an unnerving quiver of buzzes, rumbles and rattles, mechanically cadenced the second, a festival of exuberant sequencers the third, a drone finale the fourth. Overall this is one of the most important records of 1994.
