Mahākāla is a fierce protective deity in both Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism. In Hinduism, Mahākāla is a form of Shiva, specifically representing Shiva as the “Great Time” or “Lord of Time and Death.” The name itself means “Great Black One” or “Great Destroyer,” signifying Shiva’s role as the force that dissolves all things at the end of time. In Buddhism, Mahākāla is adapted as a dharmapala (protector of the Dharma) but retains much of his fierce, time-destroying aspect rooted in Shiva’s mythos. So, Mahākāla is essentially the wrathful manifestation of Shiva, embodying the absolute power of time, death, and ultimate transformation.
