This is the first video in a new series I hope to do of walking around the city of Detroit, (maybe another place once in a while). Hopefully you all enjoy it and get to experience the city I have come to love. I apologize for the video quality as well, as this is my first time shooting any video on a mount, which led to some hiccups and things not being quite aligned throughout the video. This video was also originally shot with sound, but using my phone's microphone. This led to a lot of unnecessary background noise due to a combination of the device and the setting. The cleanup efforts were very noisy and could be heard throughout a portion of campus, as well as the fact it was relatively windy that day. The recording also picked up sounds like my sandals flopping about and my breathing. All of these things combined to lead me to decide to cut the sound and replace it with some (hopefully) soothing background music. In the future, I hope to get a microphone of some kind that will allow me to be able to control the audio at least somewhat successfully.
=Location Info=
This episode we walk around the campus of Wayne State University on a hot and cloudy morning. Wayne State is the third-largest university in the state of Michigan, after Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. As of 2015, the university had an enrollment of a little over 27,000 students. It is also one of three research universities in the state, the other two being already mentioned. It is situated in the northwest quadrant of the Midtown neighborhood in Detroit.
The main campus is isolated from the rest of the city by Cass Avenue to the east, I-94 to the north, M-10 to the west, and Warren Avenue to the south. While there are a number of other buildings laying outside this area, notably Old Main, the bulk of Wayne State's classes and dorms lay inside this quarter. This is one of the reasons I chose to walk this area specifically, as well as the fact that covering every corner of campus would result in a very long video.
Due to the pandemic, almost all classes moved online, with most university buildings being closed, as well as many dorms being closed or their capacities limited. Because of these reasons, and due to it being summer, the campus is very empty and quiet. Due to a major flood that hit the city in late June, a number of buildings on the northside of campus flooded heavily, which has led to restoration efforts, primarily seen around 44:42.
With the university planning to resume all in-person activities this upcoming school year starting in September, I will possibly return to campus to film the area when there are people, as well as maybe getting indoor shots of places like the student center.
=Interesting Places & Course Description=
In this video, we start at the intersection of Cass and Ferry. This intersection contains the Verona Apartments, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. We head west down Ferry Street before we reach Cass and head south. We come across the Belcrest Apartments, which is also on the NRHP. Then, we continue through campus, passing by numerous buildings like the Walther Reuther Library, which is the largest labor archive in the United States, as well as the Max Jacobs house. We pass by the student center as we make our way south down Gullen Mall to the Fountain Court, taking a back path by State Hall to get back to Gullen Mall. We get a brief look at the Linsell House, before we continue west onto the area containing Manoogian Hall, as we head north on Anthony Wayne Drive (3rd Avenue) before we come to Towers Residential Suites, and have a glimpse at the statues of Marquette, Cadillac, Lasalle, and Richard, who all used to be on the old Detroit City Hall before being moved to campus. We continue down Reuther Mall to Gullen Mall once again, where we head north, getting a brief look at the Yamasaki Reflecting Pool at the McGregor Memorial Conference Center. Both of these were designed by Minoru Yamasaki, who went on to design the original World Trade Center, and designed numerous other buildings on campus and around the city. Finally, we reach Gilmour Mall, and head east back to Cass, where our journey ends.
