Clarence has been out collecting a few Aussie natives. They can do pretty much anything in the garden, from providing shade, providing habitat, a beautiful feast, or just looking good. Even if you don’t have a place to plant in your garden, you can always pop them in a pot. There are lots of species more suited to grow in containers, and dwarf cultivars are a great choice for pots with their compact forms.
Many of our most beloved plants can be found in dwarf forms. Things like bottlebrush, Westringia, and some of our more spectacular Banksias, such as Birthday Candles. They all look sensation in compact forms.
Groundcovers don’t just have to grow on the ground! Things like scaevola or prostrate grevillea look great in a low-profile pot. Why not elevate them onto a wall or table where you can enjoy the habit even more. Planting a full-on floral display in a container means you can move them into view when they are at their peak. Things like kangaroo paw and paper daisies produce an abundance of blooms and are perfect for a sunny spot.
Its important to remember that even the hardiest species are completely reliant on you when you put them in a pot. Make sure you use a good quality free-draining soil mix and keep the watering up. It takes a lot of energy to produce these flowers, and even one day without water can make them droop or fall.
If you have your heart set on a particular plant for a pot, it will be fine if it responds well to pruning. There are lots of species to choose from, things like tea tree and woolly bush with their fantastic foliage are particularly well suited to a good prune. The trick is to prune early when they are nice and young, and prune regularly. Watch out for possums, they might try to do a bit of extra ‘pruning’! Tip pruning regularly is key, this can be done straight after flowering and again during main growth flushes.
When it comes to native containers, you don’t have to be contained! Grab a few of your favs and get potting.
