🌉 2. Gorokghata Ghat Bridge
From Gorokghata Ghat, you must cross a scenic bridge of about 500 meters. You can walk or take an auto. Trees on both sides and the calm surroundings make this bridge walk peaceful and photogenic.
🛕 3. Rakhine Buddhist Temple (Ananda Mitta Buddhist Temple)
Located about 800 meters from Gorokghata Ghat, this beautiful Rakhine Buddhist Monastery is situated inside the main Rakhine village. It reflects the Buddhist culture and heritage of Cox’s Bazar.
🏠 4. Sikder Manzil
Built in 1947 by late Haji Hamza Mia Sikder, this was the first two-storied building in Maheshkhali. The house stands on 2 acres of land and represents the historical architecture of the island.
🛕 5. Golden Temple (Maheshkhali)
This approximately 300-year-old temple is currently closed for tourists. Although entry is restricted, its outer structure still showcases historical beauty and religious importance.
🐟 6. Dried Fish Processing Areas (Shutki Palli)
Maheshkhali has scattered dried fish zones, not a single village. Locals catch fish using trawlers and dry them for 5–8 days. This is an important part of Maheshkhali’s economy and culture.
🌊 7. Mandir Ghat Jetty (Shooting Bridge)
Locally known as Shooting Bridge, this 700-meter-long jetty offers stunning views of the Maheshkhali Channel. You can reach it by auto for around 40 taka. A great place for sunset views and photography.
🛕 8. Adinath Temple (আদিনাথ মন্দির)
Located on Mainak Hill, Adinath Temple is one of the most sacred Shiva temples in Bangladesh. The temple sits 280 feet (85.3 meters) above sea level and requires climbing 69 steps.
🕉️ Mythology & History
According to the Ramayana, Ravana placed the Shivlinga on this hill while traveling from Kailash to Lanka.
Later history mentions Nur Mohammad Sikdar, whose cow mysteriously poured milk on a black stone at this hill, leading to the establishment of the temple in the 16th century.
Adinath Temple is now an important Shiva Tirtha and pilgrimage site.
🛕 9. Ram Sita Temple
Located at the top of Mainak Hill, above Adinath Temple, this Hindu temple offers panoramic views and spiritual calm.
🛕 10. Buddhist Pagoda
Built around 1790 by the Rakhine community, these pagodas were constructed after the Burmese conquest of Arakan. Similar pagodas can be found in Ramu, Teknaf, and Cox’s Bazar Sadar.
🍃 11. Betel Cultivation (Maheshkhali Paan / পান চাষ)
Maheshkhali is world-famous for its sweet betel leaf (মহেশখালীর পান).
Almost every household is involved in betel cultivation, and a large portion of Bangladesh’s exported betel comes from this island.
The soil, water, and climate make Maheshkhali betel uniquely thin, sweet, and flavorful.
⚡ 12. Matarbari Power Plant & Deep Sea Port
The Matarbari Coal Power Plant is a mega project built on 1,414 acres, with a capacity of 1,200 MW.
A deep sea port is also under construction, capable of handling Panamax and Capesize vessels, making it one of the most important future ports of Bangladesh.
🏝️ 13. Sonadia Island
Sonadia Island has a 15-kilometer-long beach, almost untouched due to limited transportation.
• Purba Para: Sonadia Campfire Resort with tent houses and lake views
• Paschim Para: A quiet, private-like beach
During low tide, red crabs can be seen crawling across the shore—perfect for nature lovers and photographers.
These are the 13 must-visit tourist places in Maheshkhali Upazila, Cox’s Bazar.
