YIIK I.V - Benevolent Psychosis | Final Boss

YIIK Update is a very tricky game to talk about. A Frankenstein's monster of objective improvements, forced new content that the game refuses to acknowledge creating an extremely segmented game where you are noticeably switching back and forth between old and new content, side steps, repeating the exact same issues and then just putting the entire sequel to YIIK for free alongside the remake which is extremely cool.
This story about how Alex YIIK was actually an autistic mute child (because they couldn't get his VA for drama reasons) who trapped his friends in a fictional world does not mesh at all with the original YIIK no matter how many retcons have been added, it reeks of justification for the shallow narrative of the original.
The video above doesn't even go into the whole concept of Michael being the villain with a gun (like that running shine video they absolutely watched but refuse to acknowledge), the onism site become a living meme to the equivalent of a nuke, the fact the player is actually a meme child and also all four party members in the video. IV is a huge achievement in scale and spectacle alone but these two games are not the same story and I think it speaks to the pointlessness of the original that they had to completely change the context for the original to justify the amount of time it wastes.
Gameplay is slightly improved but just as easy to break (You shouldn't be able to remove 40% of the final bosses health in one go) when you truly understand the system. Music is objectively great, if there's anything I'll praise is the OST.
I think above all YIIK 1.5 just makes me sad, there's an air of cynical contempt from the game in certain aspects regarding the concept of criticism as a cancer and spoon feeding every aspect of the game to the player with forced definitions of common words, there's a hidden resentment underneath it all that just comes across as sad especially coming from the guys who lashed out at the industry on a podcast.
YIIK 1.5 is a herculean effort that should be commended, there was a lot of time and love underneath the cynicism to be celebrated but the end product still doesn't redeem YIIK at all which is quite upsetting, hopefully the devs will be able to put the meme of YIIK behind them, accept the loss without something to prove and truly make something exceptional.
