Welcome to 'Mechanics of Human Movement' course !
This lecture provides an overview of assistive devices for mobility, with a focus on prostheses and orthoses:
Types of Assistive Devices: Discuss various assistive devices used for walking, including crutches, walkers, prostheses, orthoses, and exoskeletons.
Prostheses, Orthoses, and Exoskeletons: Define:
Prosthesis: A device that replaces a missing limb.
Orthosis: A supportive device that assists a limb with existing function.
Exoskeleton: A wearable robotic system that provides external support and assistance.
Active vs. Passive Devices: Differentiate between active devices, which utilize external power sources (e.g., batteries and motors), and passive devices, which rely on human body movements for actuation.
Challenges in Prosthetic Design: Discuss the complexities in designing prostheses, particularly those replacing limbs with complex articulation like the hand and foot.
Components of a Prosthesis: Describe the various components of a typical prosthesis, including the socket, liner, pylon, connectors, and prosthetic foot. Emphasize the importance of socket fit for user comfort and functionality.
Prosthetic Foot Design Considerations: Highlight the challenge of replicating the complex functionality of the human foot in a prosthetic design. Introduce the Solid Ankle Cushioned Heel (SACH) foot as the simplest type of prosthetic foot.
NPTEL Courses permit certifications that can be used for Course Credits in Indian Universities as per the UGC and AICTE notifications.
