The axolotl ( Ambystoma mexicanum ) is a unique amphibian species native to the ancient lake systems of Mexico. These aquatic salamanders are characterized by their external gills, which are feathery appendages branching out from the sides of their heads. Axolotls are neotenic, meaning they retain their larval features throughout their lives, even when sexually mature. This remarkable characteristic is what allows for their extraordinary regenerative abilities. They can regenerate lost limbs, spinal cord tissue, and even parts of their brain with astonishing efficiency. Sadly, axolotls are critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss and pollution. However, they are relatively common in captivity, where their fascinating biology continues to be studied.
