CAP Center Symposium 2025:
This session was presented by Natasha Petry, PharmD, MPH, BCACP, Associate Professor of Practice and Clinical Pharmacist at NDSU and Sanford Health.
Pharmacogenomics is grounded in the principle that genetic variations influence individual responses to medications, making it a critical component of personalized medicine and contemporary pharmacy practice. By applying the patient-care process to real-world case studies, pharmacists can optimize drug therapy through pharmacogenomic testing, ensuring safer and more effective treatment outcomes. As the field evolves, emerging trends such as expanded genetic panels and integration with electronic health records are enhancing patient care and clinical decision-making. To incorporate pharmacogenomics into practice, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can take actionable steps such as pursuing specialized training, utilizing available testing resources, collaborating with prescribers, and educating patients about the benefits of genetic-guided therapy.
