In 2014 I had the chance to join a team of anthropologists working with the Agta people (sometimes Aita), of north-eastern Luzon, in the Philippines.
The Agta are semi-nomadic hunter gatherers, and while being within their community was fascinating, I was drawn to the powerful river near the village.
There, I encountered a number of small fishes, including at least one, if not two species of Stiphodon goby, a popular aquarium fish.
This video shows the habitat and I talk about my experience, not only of the difficulty of trying to film in the strong currents of the river, but of the plight of the Agta, facing modern issues, including poaching, agricultural encroachment on their lands, and the influence of the evangelical church, which results in profound social, cultural and environmental consequences.
