“Our family’s one of the oldest iceberg lettuce growers in Queensland,” says fourth-generation iceberg lettuce farmer Ray Taylor. Taylor Family Produce in Redland Bay, QLD, produces 150,000 heads of lettuce a week for roughly nine to 10 months a year.
The family’s agricultural expertise was imperative when severe drought hit in the summer of 2019. Ray had no choice but to reduce other crops to accommodate iceberg plants and while production is currently down to 20 per cent on average, his outlook for the year is positive.
Hear how Ray and his family grow their prized iceberg lettuce for Woolworths and why they’re so passionate about what they do.
Did you know?
To retain freshness, iceberg lettuce is best wrapped in a dry paper towel and placed in the crisper section of the fridge.
