The official distance for the Weardale Way is 77 miles / 124 km

With mistakes and small detours our route was 106 miles / 171 km

But, including the two bonus sections that I did (Killhope Law and Durham City)... the total was 118 miles / 190 km

From Killhope to Frosterley the walk is amazing. Lots of points of interest and spectacular scenery.

From Frosterley to South Hylton the scenery and walking is generic farmland and river banks. However, what it lacks in scenery it more than makes up with history. This section has castles, old churches, old abbeys, World Heritage site, museums...

South Hylton to Bede Cross in Roker, Sunderland is grim. There is very little endearing about the final section.

The people we met were mixed. In upper Weardale Way there were those who were very helpful and those who had a deep mistrust of strangers. In general the further we headed down the river, the more friendly and helpful people became.

I can recommend the trail. It is interesting and in parts stunning. It provides a wide variety of walking. There are also many smaller trails leading from the main trail, many are worth doing.
