Taipei, Taiwan is located within the Pacific Ring of Fire making the island prone to natural disasters. There are many earthquakes daily and a volcano looms over Taiwan’s capital city. Learn how the island prepares for these natural disasters in this episode of Taiwan Keywords.
Mount Tatun is an active volcano located in Yangmingshan National Park to the north of Taipei City, Taiwan. The volcano lies extremely close to the densely populated metropolitan area of Taipei. Our host Cheng Kuo-wei talks to the researcher who discovered the active magma reservoir and alerted the government to the potential disaster. He also learns about how Taiwan has developed the "Formosa Array," a special early warning system that monitors and identifies any potential threats of a volcanic eruption.
Another risk for natural disasters lies with earthquakes. Taiwan is home to the Chelungpu fault line and the island sits in the Pacific Ring of Fire. This means that the island experiences potentially hundreds of earthquakes a day, and they are monitored at the Central Weather Bureau's Seismological Center. The early warning systems and response teams that are in place today are a result of a particularly deadly earthquake that happened on September 21, 1999 (known colloquially as 921). Not only did Taiwan implement more stringent building requirements as a result of the quake, but special search and rescue teams were established using dogs. Additionally, the Chelungpu fault line was excavated for deeper research into the fault line in the hopes of preventing another tragedy like 921.
