American contemporary music composer John Corigliano‘s Circus Maximusis a
is a musical recreation of the frenzied and violent scenes of the Circus Maximus, an ancient Roman amphitheater.
The piece is a large orchestral score in eight movements, with surround effects that include trumpets, percussion, and even a marching band to make the audience feel like they’re right in the middle of the arena.

Gunshots ring out in the final movement, culminating in the piece‘s climax, a metaphor for the barbaric frenzy of ancient Rome and the violence of modern mass media.
