An interpretation of La Volage (Passacaille) by Charles Mouton, performed on a Baroque lute by Antoine Pansera.
Charles Mouton (1617 - before 1699) was a French lutenist and composer who was probably born in Rouen and probably studied with Denis Gaultier. It was around 1680 that Mouton published two collections of pieces for the lute ''Pièces de luth sur différents modes''; the first book includes precious indications on the execution of the pieces. In all, there are over 120 other Mouton pieces scattered in various manuscripts. In 1690, he posed for the portraitist François de Troy whose painting is visible in this video. Mouton's music possesses a mysterious charm and demonstrates great creativity.
His Passacaille “La Volage” is a perfect example of his refined art; a graceful, subtly ornamented meditation on a repeating bass line. Its elegant melancholy and understated ornamentation reveal the delicate balance between structure and improvisation that defines late 17th-century French music. The piece unfolds like a slow dance — introspective yet full of life — a reminder of how Mouton’s music bridges the grandeur of the Baroque with the intimacy of the lute.
I'm a Baroque lute, Renaissance lute, Classical guitar, and other plucked-string instruments aficionado!
My repertoire focuses mainly on Early music, but also includes Romantic and Avant-Garde works.
