HAMILTON, Ohio (WKRC) - Jurors in Butler County heard emotional testimony Thursday from the case of a child abused to death.
Three-year-old Hannah Wesche died in March 2018. Her babysitter, 37-year-old Lindsay Partin, is accused of beating Wesche and causing, what doctors call, abusive brain injuries. Wesche died in the hospital days later.
For the first time Thursday, we heard from the defendant in her own words. The 911 calls and police interviews were played in court. Partin denies hurting Wesche, saying she would never hurt a child.
That day, Partin called 911 after she says Wesche collapsed. In court Thursday, Butler County Detective Janee Lambert reenacted what Partin had told them happened.
"She said that Hannah was walking through the dining room and turned around and looked back at her. And as she was taking her jacket off, she says 'donuts and couch,' and falls down and hits her face on the cart as she pulls up towards the floor," said Lambert.
The detective also said Partin told them Wesche had fallen off a toy train the day before. That train was brought in for the jury to see.
But in the interrogation room, investigators insisted the doctors said Wesche's fatal injuries happened that morning at Partin's house. In the video, Partin insists Wesche had to have had the injury before coming to her house, but an investigator says there's no way that could be true.
The defense cross-examined Lambert late Thursday afternoon. They are trying to prove Partin wasn't the only one who could've caused the 3-year-old's injuries, saying her dad dropped her off and she collapsed almost immediately.
Partin is charged with murder, involuntary manslaughter and four counts of child endangering.
