This weekend, Railroading Heritage of Midwest America hosted its first public mainline excursions out of the refurbished Rock Island Silvis shop, running from Silvis to South Amana and return on September 20th. Leading the excursion was Union Pacific DDA40X 6936, the largest operational diesel locomotive in the world. Once used by Union Pacific on various passenger specials, the locomotive had not run for many years before it was donated to RRHMA in 2022. Restored to operation, this is 6936’s first mainline run under RRHMA ownership. In addition to 6936, Iowa Interstate’s Rock Island heritage unit 513 also joined the train, followed by four former UP passenger coaches, a power car, five IAIS P70 coaches, and two observation cars. This rare mileage trip was attended by many railfans and a great time was had by all. This is just the first excursion of many to come from RRHMA, as Union Pacific steam locomotives 3985 and 5511 continue their restorations. Many thanks to RRHMA and IAIS for their cooperation in making these excursions happen!
