Avenir Funèbre is a French project initiated by B. (Somniafinis) and P. (John Lordswood), members who will work together as a duo on other musical projects as well as serving as archivists for The Dungeon Synth Archives YouTube channel later in 2015 (influential channel in the Dungeon Synth scene). The first album was inspired by the dark and macabre atmosphere of the Black Death during the Middle Ages, a significant connection to death that would become the central theme of the project going forward. The compositions are minimalist, dark ambient blending with synthesizers to create unsettling sonic textures. The project released a demo The Black Death containing test tracks recorded some time after the release of the first album. A decade-long hiatus followed before Avenir Funèbre returned with a second album in 2023, Le Retour de la Peste (The Return of the Plague). This album was revived by John Lordswood who brought back his years of experience, with a more gloomy vision for this project. The dark ambient sound remains, featuring synthesizers as well as medieval instruments like the nyckelharpa, the hurdy-gurdy, the shofar and vocals (often whispered or shouted). The project would change its name the following year to Pensées Noires to mark the change in direction alone.
