This is the first part of a film exploring the long history of the deep water harbour at Piel, Roa and South Walney in Cumbria.
Having been born in and having grown up in Barrow-in-Furness, this place has always been special to me and to many of my fellow Barrovians.
Surprisingly, it was only in May 2019 that I took my first ever walk to Piel across the sands from Walney. I was familiar with the history of Piel Island and its castle as being the property of the monks of Furness Abbey who traded from here.
But on that day I felt that the harbour’s history must go back much further. It is indeed the finest harbour in Morecambe Bay. It must surely play a part in the bay’s history going back to Roman times and earlier…
This is my personal take on the history of the deep water harbour at Piel and an attempt to explain what it is that makes the area feel so special to me.
And hopefully also to you….
