The better way to do this problem... Use the conservation of energy to find the acceleration of a ball, hoop and disc. Despite the presence of friction, mechanical energy is conserved in this problem. Friction does work to convert translational kinetic energy into rotational kinetic energy.
This problem is a 'classic' in introductory physics courses such as AP Physics 1, AP Physics C Mechanics and appears on tests such as the A Levels and the JEE.
